Over the past few years, I have been sending various
artworks to a group of friends and peers. The goal is to distribute my
artwork to an audience that will appreciate it without having to go
through the traditional channel of the art gallery. The foundations of the
mailing list go back to the practice when I was young of making people
birthday cards and later Christmas cards by hand. The Christmas cards in
particular were becoming more elaborate and the list of people that I was
sending them to was becoming longer. For Christmas 1993, the card was one
page in 1994, two pages and in 1995 it was three. I was inspired to make a
Valentine’s Day card in the beginning of 1996 and mailed it to a group
of friends. Valentine’s aren’t uncommon and people didn’t think what
I was doing was anything out of the ordinary until the following month I
sent out a St. Patrick’s Day card followed by a comic on Easter and a
Tarot Deck on Mother’s day. Since then I have been sending work out at
various intervals – usually every two months. I have drifted away from
the holiday associations and have tried to incorporate other levels to the
mailings. These other levels include mailing from other cities,
interactive mailings (the so–called Special Offers) and the mailing of
art objects.
The mailing list continues on though it’s goals and
effectiveness will be affected by the existence of the website. As the
website fulfills many of my desires to reach a broad audience without
going through the traditional art channels but I am confident that it will
not replace the pleasure that people get from receiving a physical piece
of artwork in their mailbox.
